Governor Oecumenius. From North Agora at Aphrodisias, c. AD 400. The head belongs to a statue whose inscribed base praises the governor's knowledge of the law, his ability to speak both Greek and Latin, and his purity of mind and hand. On top of the head, a Christian sculptor covertly marked his faith in three inscribed letters :XMG - Christon Maria genna, 'Christ was born to Mary'.
