Naphthalene crystals. Light micrographs of thin layer crystal landscapes of naphthalene crystals seen through crossed polarisers and retarders or coloured filters. This chemical is best known for its use in mothballs, although it is not used in modern mothballs as it is toxic and thought to cause cancer. Naphthalene is also used as an intermediate material in the chemical industry. Other names include tar camphor and albocarbon. It is a volatile fluid that forms a vapour (sublimes) at room temperature.
