Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen and her husband Knut Schmidt-Nielsen. From left to right, Danish-US physiologists Bodil Mimi Krogh Schmidt-Nielsen (1918-2015) and Knut Schmidt-Nielsen (1915-2007), with Duke University secretary Barbara Wagner. The Schmidt-Nielsens were professors in comparative physiology at Duke University, USA. They are shown with research equipment being assembled for an expedition to the Sahara Desert in 1953 to study camels. In the left foreground is a scale used for weighing camels. Schmidt-Nielsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She received her Doctor of Odontology in 1946, the first Danish woman to do so. The same year she moved to the US to take up research positions at Duke University and Case Western Reserve University. She is best known for her research into water balance in desert mammals. She was the first woman to be President of the American Physiological Association (1975-1976).
