. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation . he first tank and a view box behindthe second. Number 1 holds a 3-inch E. G. C. W ILLIAMS. M. , Illinois porcelain lined insert tank for develop-ing and a 4 ^4-inch tank for fixing witha space for icing the water between thetwo. The hardening bath used has beenselected from the many that have beentried because of its hot weather stock solution of acid hardener ismade in a five-gallon bottle or stonejar and one-half gallon is used eachtime the tank is filled. One filling issufficient for at least 500 films. Ma-terials for five gallons of hardener are: Water 1 0 Qts. Sodium Sulphite 5 Lbs. 28:, Acetic Acid 6 Qts. Powdered Potassium Alum ... 5 the sodium sulphite in sixquarts of water. It will not dissolvebut will form a milky suspension whichfettles rapidly unless stirred. Pour thesuspension into the five-gallon bottle\vhich contains two quarts of warmwater to prevent breaking. Add theacetic acid by siphon through a rub-ber tube rotating the bottle to insure. solution of the sulphite. When theacetic acid is all in, the sulphite willbe in solution. Dissolve the alum inthe remaining two quarts of water andadd to the bottle while stirring con-stantly. Fill the bottle with water tothe five-gallon mark. The result is aclear solution that will keep indefinitely. To make five gallons of fixing bath, dissolve twelve pounds of Hypo in twogallons of water by heating or bystanding 24 hours in four gallons ofwater. Pour the Hypo solution intothe tank, add one-half gallon of thestock hardening solution and fill thetank to within one inch of the top. Stirthoroughly before using. As the levelof the bath in the tank is lowered byuse, add water or ice until the fixingtime is definitely increased then makenew bath. The solution as made is socorxentrated that it will stand con-siderable diluting. Cool the tank with broken ice to be-low 70 degrees. Leave films in the fix-ing bath for at least fifteen minutes
