Breast cancer. Light micrograph of cancer cells (duct carcinoma) of the human breast. Two clusters of malignant cells (blue) are seen, with large nuclei (purple). In the background is a field of unstained blood cells. Carcinoma is a cancer which arises in the epithelium, in this case the cells lining the ducts of the glandular mammary tissue. It is the most common form of breast cancer. A malignant tumour arises by transformation of normal cells into ones that escape the usual moderating controls of growth and differentiation. Cells become large, divide rapidly, & may invade surrounding tissue. Stained with MGG. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size.
