In the middle ages the roadsideale-house \\ as distinguished by a stake projectingfrom the house, on which some object was hungfor a sign. Alexandrinum (opus), R. A kind of mosaicemployed especially for the pavement of distinctive feature of these mosaics is thatthe lines or figures composing the designs are intwo colours only, the prevailing ones being redand black upon a white ground.
