Anatomy and royalty, 17th century. French anatomist Jean Riolan the Younger (lower left, 1577-1657) presenting a treatise on anatomy to the French Kin

Anatomy and royalty, 17th century. French anatomist Jean Riolan the Younger (lower left, 1577-1657) presenting a treatise on anatomy to the French King Louis XIII (right, 1601–1643) in Paris. This artwork is the frontispiece to Riolan's 'Anthropographia et osteologia' (1626). The artwork, by the engraver Crispi de Pas, includes Latin text at top and bottom, and the biblical quote 'Honorum Medicum' (honour physicians) on the book itself. Riolan, a contemporary of the English anatomist William Harvey, was a traditionalist who taught the 2nd-century theories of Galen and opposed the new ideas proposed by Harvey.
