Healthy foetus at around the 20th week of development, coloured 3D ultrasound scan. The head, hands and part of the thorax are visible. 3D scanning enables physiological disorders such as cleft lip and spina bifida to be diagnosed before birth. Ultrasound is a diagnostic technique which sends high-frequency sound waves into the body via a transducer. The returning echoes are recorded and used to build an image of internal structures.
