. Research for tomorrow's forests : 1983 research accomplishments. --. Forests and forestry Research United States. Acid Mine Drainage Not a Major Problem in Appalachian Watersheds An analysis of streams from surface- mined watersheds throughout the Appalachian coal mining shown that streams are less acid than commonly believed. Research reports from the Northeastern Station show that at least two-thirds of streams draining Doth mined and unmined wa- tersheds have pH values exceeding 6 (mildly acid). Values averaged on pre-1972 mined watersheds, on wa- tersheds mined from 1972 on, and (neutral) on unmined watersheds. In general, streams from watersheds mined after January 1972 are more favorable for aquatic life (less acid) than those from watersheds mined ear- lier. The pH values of streams in all categories also tend to be grouped in accordance with geologic boundaries. The reports are being used as baseline information by miners, consultants, environmentalists, regulatory agencies, and others. Also, the data are useful as a basis for future water quality studies. Some States are trying to obtain per- mission from the Office of Surface Mining to use these data in lieu of some of the pre-mining water sampling now required as part of mining permit appli- cations, besides the published reports, this information has been disseminated in training sessions to mining operators and regulatory personnel in Kentucky and West Virginia, and sessions are planned for other States in At least two-thirds of streams draining mined and unmined watersheds are above pH 6 (only mildly acid). 9.
