Men being rescued from the Northern Pacific, which caught fire on the Fire Island sand bar near Honelyville, in January 1919. The soldiers, mostly ambulatory wounded, were rescued using breeches buoys, surf boats, naval launches, and submarine chasers. No fatalities occurred. Red Cross provided coffee and sandwiches in a tent on the beach.
