Light micrograph of the tick, Ixodes sp., that transmits Lyme disease to humans. Seen here is the tick nymph stage. At left are the mouthparts: adapted to bore through & attach to the skin, and for blood-sucking; four pairs of legs also assist the tick to hold onto its host. Ticks are para- sitic, some carrying diseases affecting humans. Species of the tick Ixodes carry the spirochaete bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease. The tick is carried on dogs. The disease causes skin lesions, flu-like symptoms and joint inflammation. Early treatment is with antibiotic drugs. Magnification: x15 at 35mm size.
