On entering the church the left-hand wall is foundI to be covered with the mostremarkable series of frescoes inthe Italian Grisons. They aredisposed in three rows, one abovethe other, occupying the wholewall of the church as far as thechancel. The top row depicts aseries of incidents prior to thecrucifixion, and is cut up by thepulpit at the chancel end. TheseI events are treated so as to form asingle picture. The second row is in severalThere is a saint. s. cristoforo. compartments, in armour on horseback, life-size, killing a dragon,and a queen who seems to have been leading thedragon by a piece of red tape buckled round itsneck—unless, indeed, the dragon is supposed to havebeen leading the queen. The queen still holds the MESOCCO. 273 tape and points heavenward. Next to this thereis a very nice saint on horseback, who is giving acloak to a man who is nearly naked. Then comesSt. Michael trampling on the dragon, and holding apair of scales in his hand, in which are two little soulsof a man and of a woman. The dragon has a hookin his hand, and thrusting this up from under , he hooks it on to the edge of the scale withthe woman in it, and drags her down. The man, itseems, will escape.
