As you cross the Grand Canal over the Ponte Dell’ Accademia take time to look east at this classic Venetian scene. The white baroque domes of Santa Maria della Salute rise above the Punta della Dogana, the custom house which guards the entrance to the canal. The Peggy Guggenheim collection is housed in the single story building called the Palazzo Nonfinito or the Unfinished Palace by the Venetians. These buildings are in the upmarket and popular sestri of Dorsoduro. The buildings on the opposite bank of this evocative canal are in the sestri of San Marco. Their elegant main entrances front on to the Grand Canal with easy access for water transport.
