The Middle Delaware Valley is thatpart of the Delaware River below tide-water at Trenton and above Salem,N. Y. The description of the regionis deferred until the completion of thelist when all remarks about how thecities of Philadelphia, Pennsylvaniaand Camden, New Jersey influence theoccurrence of the birds, etc., will becommented on in the fuller report. The reason I refrain from using thescientific names, which are supposedto be of such importance in a list ofthis nature, is to economize the ac-cepted English names of our birds aswell as to economize space, and as allbirds have common names by whichthey are known to ornithologists, to me superfluous to give thescientific ones also in a preliminaryreport. 1. Holboell Grebe; rare winter vis-itant; October to March. 2. Horned Grebe; common tran-sient; spring and fall. 3. Pied-billed Grebe; commonspring and fall transient. Both spe-cies
