Mr Joseph E. Porter was a man ofrare courage and of sterling principlesof truth, and of strong and clear convic-tions of duty. While very quiet and re-served he was full of courage, bravery andfirmness, and of endurance in the midstof many trials through which he was his lot to live in days of hardshipand toil, days that required much coolenduring courage to enable one to meetthe fire of war and the sword of wasteand death. His father was one of like courageand endurance, well known as a lover cftruth and sternly opposing passed away from earth but a fewweeks before his son, and the two rank-together as men of virtue and integrity,father and son equally sharing the samefate, equally bearing the same honor ofloving the right and hating the wrong. Mr. Porters predilections were in favbr of the Bible doctrine of divine, creative and eternal sovereignty, and henceof the predestination of God who worksall things after the counse
