The mill itself occupies about one-third of the block boundedby Notre Dame, Atwater Avenue, and Levis Street, and is built threestoreys high, every square foot of its floor space being utilized with aview to making the process as continuous as possible so as to preventcongestion and unnecessary handling, as it is the companys policyto save every cent possible in the cost of manufacture, in order thatit may have more money to spend in perfecting the quality of its pro-duct. The rip or fitting saws are placed at right angles toand beside the swing saws, so that the operators do not have to movefrom their tracks in performing their work. This battery of saws is driven by two 10 motors suspendedfrom the ceiling, which drive half of the sets through a very unusualand ingenious arrangement of belting and shafting.
