There was the mahogany room, a large bedroom onthe ground floor, and up-stairs were other spacious bed-rooms and many baths, while everywhere were Orientalrugs and draperies, and statuary and paintings. Therewas a fireplace under a window, after the English pattern,so that in winter-time one could at the same momentwatch the blaze and the falling snow. The library win-dows looked out over the valley with the little stream in it,and through and across the tree-tops. At the top of thehouse was what became Clemenss favorite retreat, thebilliard-room, and here and there were unexpected littlebalconies, which one could step out upon for the view. 522.
