They secrete the gastric fluid, or furnish the mucus that covers the surface of the epithelium ; they are consequently distinguished as pepsine {or peptic) and mucous glands, the former being much more numerous than the latter. They are composed of a simple straight tube at their origin (excretory duct), which frequently divides into two or more flexuous tubes that terminate in culs-de-sac (or glandular caca).
