Snake pipefish (Entelurus aequoruis). This is an open-water fish native to the Atlantic Ocean. It can grow to more than 50 centimetres in length. Like the seahorse, to which it is related, it is the male who carries the developing eggs on the underside of its body. According to some trawl surveys, an increase of 10,000% in the snake pipefish population of northern British waters has been recorded from 2002 to 2006. This dramatic increase in numbers is unexplained at present. These fish were found under rocks at low tide in an estuary in the UK.
