This form of stack has been shown by Mr. J. Snow-den Bell in his paper on Locomotive Front-Ends, read beforethe Western Railway Club, September, 1899, page 25, and il-lustrated by Fig. 19 accompanying. Where these inside stacksare used an extremely low nozzle is also employed, so that thedistance from top of Lhe nozzle to the minimum diameter ofthe stack is 32 ins., and the total height of stack, from choketo top, is as much as 5(1 ins. for passenger and 62 ins. forfreight locomotives. It will be seen, therefore, that somebenefits must have been derived from the use of long stacks,since, in the case of engines which allow but
