Powhatan held his court at Werowoco-moco, on the York River, and the spot is supposed to be marked by a curiousruin known as Powhatans chimney. It is on an estate called Shelly,the property of the Page family. Another ruin of great significance is theold stone building on Ware Creek, which Smith built as a place of refugefrom his savage foes during the time when starvation threatened thecolonists. As the history of the country proceeds it leaves its foot-prints along theline of the Chesapeake & Ohio.
