Two workers being fitted with protective clothing and oxygen masks before undertaking decontamination work at the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, following the accident in TMI Unit 2 on March 28th, 1979. The accident was caused by a loss of reactor cooling water that resulted in the exposure of fuel rods, some of which melted, burned through the reactor chamber lining and sank to the floor of the reactor building. In 1989, the difficult & unprecedented cleaning-up operation had been in progress for 10 years & is expected to continue for another 30 years before completion.
