Geminid meteor above Kathmandu monuments. Time-exposure image of a meteor (upper centre) in the night sky over ancient buildings and monuments in Kathmandu, Nepal. The meteor is part of the annual Geminid meteor shower. The Geminids are a meteor shower that occurs annually in December, bright enough to be seen even amidst city lights. They are due to debris from an object named 3200 Phaethon, thought to be an extinct comet. These buildings are in Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the plaza in front of the royal palace of the old Bhaktapur Kingdom. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seen here are the Taleju Bell (centre), Yaksheshvara Temple (behind bell), Chyasilin Mandap (left) and the statue of Bhupatindra Malla (right). The famous Vatsala Devi temple on this site was demolished by the earthquake of 25 April 2015. Photographed on 14 December 2015.
