The ABC of bee culture: a cyclopaedia of every thing pertaining to the care of the honey-bee; bees, honey, hives, implements, honey-plants, etc., facts gleaned from the experience of thousands of bee keepers all over our land, and afterward verified by practical work in our own apiary . hes with the beveling platform that Ishowed you in hive-making, you are to cutout the cornei-posts in this way: out pieces like Fig. II. After you get themall out, you are ready to nail up the outsideof the hive. Lay two of your corner-posts,as shown above, on your work-bench, andhave them 2 feet and 24 inches apart. Toget these dimensions without measuring. Twould nail a couple of strips to the benchjust the right distance apart; also a thirdacross the end, that we may always have thehive square and true. The chaff hive is notquite square ; it is I inch narrower on theentrance-side and the back; therefore whenyou are nailing the back and front, you areto slip a strip of wood | inch wide betweenone of your posts and yoiustop. Our siding, you remember, is just 2 feet long; well, thepieces on both front and back go clear upinto the corners of the corner-posts, and notthe sides as shov/n in the cut. This will pre-vent the side strips from coming clear up byi inch, as shown EXTERNAL SHELL. AND CORNER-POSTS OFCHAFF HIVE. A is the entrance ; B, B, B, B, the corner-posts, and C, C, C, C, the siding. Now, afterwe have got the siding nailed securely, withthe beveled edges so arranged as to keep therain out of the chaff, we will nail in eachcorner an inch strip, shown at D, D, D, D ;these are put in with heavier nails, and lockthe whole structure most securely. As there is no need of uncovering the chaffpart when we uncover the hive, we makethe cover so as to extend over the interioroidy, and have a permanent cover over thespace containing the chaff. This permanentcover is our next piece of work. Get outsome long strips, just as you did the siding, only have them | inch wider, p
