ourists and locals stand in the Barkhor Square area of Lhasa in front of the Jokhang temple

Tibet is the remote -Buddhist Himalayan territory known as the "roof of the world", and is governed as an autonomous region of China however the allegiances of many Tibetans still lie with the exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled to India following the anti Chinese uprising in 1959. Tibet has had a tumultuous history and has spent some periods functioning as an independent country but has for long periods been ruled over by the Chinese. Whilst remaining for many in the west the home of the mythical place known as Shangri-la this photographs shows Tourists and locals standing in the Barkhor Square area of Lhasa in front of the Jokhang temple which is the most revered religious structure in Tibet and is partially obscured by large clouds of incense
