British photographer Horatio Ross (1801-1886) with camera. This self-portrait shows Ross preparing a collodion plate. Captain Ross took up photography in the mid-1840s and became a pioneering amateur photographer. Much of his work documented scenery in the Highlands of Scotland, associated with his pursuits of shooting and hunting. He was a founding member of the Photographic Society of Scotland. This albumen silver print dates from the period 1856 to 1859.
