Basaltic Plug, Shiprock, NM

Shiprock, a towering basaltic plug rising dramatically from the New Mexico desert, is the eroded core of an ancient volcano and one of the most iconic geological formations in the Southwest. Standing at about 1,583 feet, this rock spire, formed from cooled magma, has withstood millions of years of erosion. Known as “Tsé Bit’a’í” or “Rock with Wings” in Navajo, it holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for the Navajo Nation. Visible from miles away, Shiprock's striking silhouette against the high desert landscape continues to captivate geologists, hikers, and those who visit to honor its place in Navajo tradition.
