Antarctic researcher. Ice core chemist Mike Landy in Antarctica. He is wearing protective clothing to prevent contamination of the ice core samples (not seen). Ice cores, drilled vertically down into the ice, contain a record of snowfall over many thousands of years. The snow, which compacts into ice, traps particles and gases from the atmosphere, allowing analysis to reveal past changes in the climate of the Earth. The reflective goggles protect Landy's eyes from the intense levels of sunlight reflected off the ice. Landy works for the British Antarctic Survey.
