Carlos Finlay. Portrait of Cuban physician Carlos Juan Finlay (1833-1915), researcher of the yellow fever mosquito. Finlay's father was a Scottish physician, and Finlay was educated in France and the USA graduating in 1855. He returned to Cuba as a physician. In 1881, Finlay published a paper describing the mosquito Aedes aegypti as the agent transmitting the disease of yellow fever. He had noticed how mosquito and yellow fever seasons co- incided. However, he couldn't prove his theory as he was unable to isolate the virus which is spread by this mosquito. Although ridiculed, Finlay was able to interest the scientist Walter Reed, and Reed later proved Finlay's theory correct.
