The date is theeleventh century. What the original purpose may have been, whether formere state or for actual use, is also uncertain. This is a remarkably fine example of the kind. The outside is coveredwith interlacing circles, sharply cut, enclosing figures of various animalsand birds in high relief. Many of these, as was usual in similar decorationsof the tenth and eleventh centuries, are fabulous or grotesque; but amongthem are an elephant, caparisoned, a stag, hares, and eagles.
