JOKAI, MAURUS, a popular Hungarian novel-ist, born at Komorn, February 19, 1825. Hisfather, an advocate, died when the boy was twelveyears old. In 1840 he entered the high school atPapa, and afterward attended that of Kecskemet,and studied law at Pesth. In 1846 he was editorof the Wochenblatt, then an important paper. In1848 he married Rosa Laborfalvi, the greatest tra-gedienne of Hungary. He was present at thesurrender of Villagos in August, 1849, and, to es-cape imprisonment, he resolved to commit arrival of his wife from Pesth, with the moneyobtained by the sale of her jewels, prevented himfrom carrying his design into execution.
