Looking SE at the remains of a prehistoric complex of 3 kerb cairns between two parallel settings of standing stones at Ardnacross, overlooking the Sound of Mull, Scotland, UK. Showing the damaged boulder kerbs of the central & S cairn with the middle standing stone of the SE row to rear. Each setting (SE & NW) comprised 3 standing stones in a row aligned NNE-SSW to the midwinter sun setting behind a flat ridge to the SW. The stones were placed in sockets & held upright by packing stones. The end stones of each row were deliberately pushed over & buried in pits leaving the centre stones standing. The central stone of the NW row fell naturally leaving a well preserved stone hole containing charcoal fragments & quartz. Three cupmarks are visible on the upper surface of the SSW slab in the NE row, & a cremation deposit & bronze bracelet were found in a pit close by. Excavations were carried out by Roger Martlew & Clive Ruggles in 1990 & 1991 using Earthwatch volunteers.
