Seated figure, possibly a priest or monk, carved as a wooden misericord beneath a tipping choir stall seat in the Old Church or Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands: seated figure, possibly a priest or monk, carved as a misericord and added to late 1400s AD wood carvings beneath tipping choir stall seats in the Oude Kerk (Old Church), Amsterdam’s oldest building. The majority of misericords in the Oude Kerk were sculpted between 1480 and 1500 and most of the human figures in them wear clothes typical of c. 1480. However, later designs, such as this carving, have replaced those damaged over the centuries. The late 1400s misericords have survived the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule and the switch from Catholicism to Calvinism under the Protestant Reformation. In August 1566, most of the Oude Kerk’s art and fittings were destroyed by people protesting against the Catholic Church. However, the misericords in the choir and some pre-Reformation stained glass were left unscathed. During so called Alteration of 1578, the Oude Kerk became Reformed Protestant church, and remains as such today. A wooden chapel had been erected at the location of today's Oude Kerk by around 1213. Over time, this structure was replaced by a stone church that was consecrated in 1306 by the bishop of Utrecht with Saint Nicholas as its patron saint.
