An old engraving of a man using a ‘sucker’ to lift a flat stone in the 1800s. It is from Victorian book of the 1890s on sports, games and pastimes. The device is made of a circular piece of leather with a string attached at its centre. The leather is moistened and is pressed flat against the stone. Once it adheres to the surface it can be pulled up using the string. The leather forms a bell shape with very little air within it – the partial vacuum created means the stone is lifted up off the ground. Today’s vacuum suction lifters are commonly used to move sheet material like sheet glass.
