Be-tween 1894 and 1896 the increase in population was a little morethan 3 per cent, while the increase in riding was over 13 per 1896 and 1898, covering the period of labor troubles, thepoimlation increased about 141 -j per cent and the riding only 7^4per cent. Between 1898 and 1900 the population increased 814per cent and the passengers carried nearly 17 per cent. Thesefigures would tend to demonstrate that prosperous and depressedtimes affect the transportation business more than increase inpopulation does.
