ROAD CONSTRUCTION Owing to the enormous cuts and fills, the 10 miles of linenow in service probably cost more than any like distance. STANDARD OPEN CAR USED BY THE WESTERN MASSA-CHUSETTS STREET RAILWAY COMPANY and the Four-Mile House, each being about 1000 ft. longthrough 20 ft. of coarse gravel, hard pan and clay. The maxi-mum grade is 5 per cent. The track ismade up of 70-lb. A. S. C. E. T-rail, laid on rockballast 2 ft. or more in depth, and bolted to chestnut ties either6 ft. x 6 ins. x 8 ins. or 7 ft. x 8 ins. x 8 ins. It is bonded with0000 flexible protected bonds of the pin expanded type. Mostof the special work consists of split switches, switch stands and targets. ROLLING STOCK A glance at the accompanying illustrations of the companysclosed and open cars is sufficient to show that the rolling stockadopted is of the most up-to-date character. The presentequipment consists of five open and three closed cars, fur-nished by the Wason Manufacturing Company, of Brighton,Mass., and the Laconia Car Works, of Laconia, N. H. The open cars are 45 ft. long over all, have a width of 10 ft
