19th Century Britannia Monument or Nelson’s Monument (or column as known locally), memorial to the British Naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson.

Six caryatides or karyatides (literally meaning maidens of Karyai) support Britannia who is said to be looking in direction of Nelson’s birthplace in Burnham Thorpe in Norfolk. The caryatides were originally made of coade stone, then replaced with concrete replicas in the late 1800s and finally in 1982 fibre glass along with the Britannia figure. The 144ft high grade 1 listed monument was restored in 2005.
