This deep purple Melastoma Candidum is a Melastomataceae (alternatively Melastomaceae), a taxon of flowering plants found mostly in the tropics. This family of trees, shrubs, or herbs (order Myrtales) are characterized by opposite 3- to 9-nerved leaves, anthers with thickened connectives, and petals inserted on the throat of the calyx and that include numerous forms cultivated as ornamentals. A number of melastomes are regarded as invasive species once naturalized in tropical and subtropical environments outside their normal range.
