The ends of the bones and joint-surfaces may be either (1) eroded,as is most usual, and greatly reduced in all their dimensions, even tothe complete destruction of several inches of their length, or (2) maypresent the hypertrophic exaggeration of an arthritis deformans. Thesetwo types may be combined in the same joint. The rule is that thehypertrophic form occurs in the knee, the atrophic variety at the hipand shoulder.
