Galeoxtia fimbriata. Linden Cat., alias Bate- mannia fimbriata, Linden and Rchh. one of his catalogues M. Linden published this plantunder the name we have here adopted. The Hethel named in the preceding remarks isfamous for something more than a Rose. HethelOld Thorn is one of our vegetable patriarchs, a stillliving witness perhaps of Roman conquest, Danishforays, and Druidical superstition. According totradition, it is mentioned as the old Thorn in adeed dated eailv in the 13th century ; and it isreported to be described in one of the Chroniclesas the mark for the meeting in an insurrection ofthe peasants in the reign of King John. We shouldbe much beholden to any antiquarian reader whocan point out the Chronicle in which this statementis to be found. That the tree is of very high antiquity cannot bedoubted. Jlr. Grigor, who described it with aninexact figure in his Eastern Arboretum in 1841,gives the following measurements :— At one footfrom the base of the trunk, twelve feet and an inchin circumference ; and at five feet high fourteenfeet and three inches ; while the circumference ofthe space
