Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Astronomer standing beneath the 73-inch telescope at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO) in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. This reflector telescope, designed and manufactured by the John Brashears telescope company, was constructed from 1914. It began operating in 1918, and at the time was the second-largest telescope in the world. The project was overseen by the Canadian astronomer John Stanley Plaskett (1865-1941), who became the first director of the DAO.
