The southeastern protion of the release area is receiving sterile flies at rate of 400 per square mile. The northern region of release area in Texas - where populations are apparently heaviest - is receiving sterile flies at rate of 1,000 per square mile. The overwintering area in New Mexico, the barrier zone of the Pecos region, and the region in Mexico along the Rio Grande from Laredo to Brownsville will receive sterile flies at rate of 600 per square mile. A total of 1,706 screw-worm cases was reported during the period, and new counties reported infested were Angelina in TEXAS and Le Flore in OKLAHOMA. On Friday, October 26, screw-worms were reported on a premise in Early County, Georgia, where they might overwinter during a mild winter. Infested animal traced to shipment of 400 animals in 8 loads originating in Guthrie, King County, Texas. Larvae found by veterinary practitioner of Blakely, Georgia, in small lesion on back of Hereford heifer. State and federal veterinarians and livestock inspectors conducted intensive inspection in involved area without finding evidence of further infestations. All animals involved in movements, other animals on premises, and contact animals inspected and treated. Sterile screw-worm flies being dropped in radial pattern of 40 miles from infested premise.
