Artwork of a German submarine destroying an English fishing boat. In September 1916, a U-boat attack caused the sinking of almost the entire Scarborough trawling fleet in just one night. However, the German commanding officer in a compassionate action, ordered the evacuation of every trawler before it was sunk. This decision spared the lives of 126 men. Painting, signed and dated 1916, is by the German artist Willy Stoewer (1864-1931).
