Kumamoto Castle is a 17th century Donjon Pagoda style castle. It is a large, extremely well fortified hilltop castle. It is from the Azuchi-Momoyama period, approximately 1560 to 1600 in which these types of castles built on tall stone bases with central towers, used for military defense, flourished.
