, Verdun, Meuse, France - View from Fort Douaumont. Heavily fortified Fort Douaumont was the main base of the defensive belt of Verdun on the hills over Meuse with occupying forces of 3000. In 1916 one of the biggest and bloodiest battles of the First World War and at the same time in the history took place. The Hell of Verdun lasted several months, took hundreds of thousands lives of German and French soldiers, without noticeable change in the position of the front.
