Vasopressin hormone molecule. Computer model showing the structure of the hormone vasopressin (AVP). AVP is stored in the posterior pituitary gland of the brain and is released into the blood stream and directly into the brain. One of its most important roles is to regulate the body's retention of water. It is released when the body is dehydrated and causes the kidneys to conserve water. It also raises blood pressure and has a variety of neurological effects on the brain.
