But the winds of the districtare so extremely violent, (see below, page 339). as to make itappear unlikely that objects so slight as lupine seeds wouldresist their action. Legumes in general are known to bedependent on organisms in the soil for that innoculaiion withthe tubercle bacteria upon which their success is might well be that while these organisms were absent fromthe general mass of ash they were i)resent in ash contaminatedby flood waters. 328 The Ohio Journal of Science [Vol. XIX, No. 6, Bacterial examinations of the soil in the neighborhood of thegrowing lupines, conducted by Jasper D. Sayre, have howeverfailed to indicate the presence of the tubercle bacillus in thesoil.
