Stone Age man hunting a mammoth (upper left), wearing animal furs and carrying a spear, club and flint knife. Stone tools are among the earliest used by humans. Animal furs were worn in cold climates, such as existed during the last Ice Age. Woolly mammoths are examples of the megafauna that existed during the Pleistocene epoch from million years ago until they went extinct around 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. This extinction may have been due to hunting by humans. This artwork is from a French school textbook, dating from the early 20th century.
