Common redpolls (Carduelis flammea) perching on a snowy branch. Redpolls are a group of northern breeding, small, passerine birds in the finch family (Fringillidae) which have characteristic red markings on their heads. Common redpolls are a woodland species, associated with birch trees. They breed somewhat further south than the Arctic redpoll and are browner and more streaked. They are primarily seed-eaters, and often feed acrobatically like a tit. Their diet may include some insects in summer. Photographed in Finland, in February.
