Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The SARS-CoV-2 virus consists of four different proteins and a strand of RNA. The “Spike” protein (S) sticks out from the membrane, giving the virus its distinctive "corona" appearance. Two other proteins, envelope protein (E) and membrane protein (M), occur throughout the membrane to provide structural integrity. Finally, Inside the virus, nucleoprotein (N) acts as a scaffolding for the 29,900 nucleotides of RNA that make up the viral genome.
